Applied Learning Programme (ALP)

KEY INFORMATION
The Applied Learning Programme (ALP) in Hong Wen School focuses on developing Innovative & Inventive Learners through Integration of Curriculum (I to I). We believe that interdisciplinary learning will give students a more holistic understanding of addressing real-world issues as they engage in the practical application of knowledge in an authentic learning environment.
In support of the Singapore Green Plan 2030, Hong Wen School will imbue in our students the responsibility to do their part in building a sustainable future through the ALP. Students will get a chance to delve deeper in areas of environmental sustainability and innovation.
Objectives of HWS ALP
To design effective learning experiences, the school will adopt the Modified Design Thinking (MDT) to develop the 21st CC and learning dispositions in our students. MDT supports a climate of inquiry where students are responsible for their own learning, going through the different phases to pose questions, investigate and apply knowledge and skills to real-world issues. It also increases the opportunities for collaboration and provides multiple instances for meaningful feedback from teacher and peers.
To nurture our students to learn for life and possess the intrinsic motivation to apply these relevant 21st CC to real world issues, the ALP will focus on developing two core dispositions in our students:
Learning Disposition of Thinking and Curiosity
As students embark on the inventive and critical thinking process of ideating
and creating, the collaborative process of sharing ideas will help to increase
their curiosity and desire to seek connections and explanations. The open
sharing can lead to reflectiveness on their own views. They also learn
to think independently through questions and build their ability to process
information fairly and accurately.
Learning Disposition of Empathy
With the focus on real-world concerns on sustainability and the lack of
resources, students learn to care for the environment (empathy) and explore
ways to change habits to reduce negative impact on the environment.
At the end of the six years education with HWS, we envision our students to be:
